Site Review: GO!Animate

If you’re like me, you have often wanted to make your own cartoons. It always seemed to me that cartoons are a great way to make whatever video you want to make without expensive casting, special effects, etc. As I researched what it takes to make a cartoon, I found out that it can take as many as SIX months of hard work and long hours to create a 30 minute cartoon. I just don’t have that kind of time.

Enter GO!Animate. I stumbled upon this site yesterday, and within minutes I had my characters created and was making my own cartoons. Within a half-hour, I had created this:

I know, I know. I may not be as funny as I think I am. But, hey, that’s pretty good for a half hour. The site is a cinch to use, and (with paid membership) even allows you to record your own voiceovers and upload music. There were some things I wasn’t too happy about, however. Here’s the pros and cons list.

Pros:

  • You get to make your own cartoons quickly without going through the whole “art” process.
  • You can create your own characters.
  • You can record your own voiceovers and upload your own music.
  • The characters have a pretty wide emotional range.
  • There are hundreds of actions your characters can perform with a huge variety of props and sound effects.

Cons:

  • You have to pay for alot. When you create a character, you have to pay for the character, plus individual accessories and attributes.
  • There is only one style of character you can create.
  • Unless you pay for membership, the capabilities are extremely limited.
  • Your characters and cameras can only perform one action per scene.

So, if you’ve always wanted to make your own cartoon, but don’t have the time or energy, this is a great solution. Sure there are some cons, but it feels like you get alot for the price.
